Medico-Legal Consultations: Information for Patients

A medico-legal report is designed to assist your solicitor and the court to obtain an appropriate outcome.

A medico-legal consultation is different from a normal medical consultation. You will be asked to fill out a range of questions in the waiting room, and this should assist you in recalling the details of the injury and the details of your past medical, employment, family history and treatment.

A relative is welcome to attend and to contribute to the background information after you have completed your detailed recollections with the doctor.

It is appreciated that the medico-legal consultation can be stressful, as details of an accident will need to be recalled, and also the details of some unpleasant periods during recovery. The questions are not intended to be offensive in any way, but it is important that the details of the injury and the treatment are accurately recalled.

The court requires the medical specialist to confirm your identification with an appropriate photo.

During the consultation you will undergo an examination. It will be important that previous investigations, including X-rays, are available.

A relative is welcome to attend and to contribute to the background information after you have completed your detailed recollections with the doctor. The fee for the medical report includes the medical consultation, a careful study of all the written material and reports provided by your solicitor, a review of X-rays and other investigations, and finally the preparation and the editing of the written report. Additional research may be required.

This report will be forwarded to the court after payment is received from your solicitor.

In providing a medico-legal report for your solicitor, it is not ethical during this consultation to discuss your treatment. This is the role of your treating doctor.
