Element 5: Sleep Hygiene

Management of poor sleep hygiene.

"Sleep hygiene" is a term used to describe the habit that influence the way that you sleep. Good sleep hygiene can help you to have a good night's sleep. Some of the following habits might help you to improve your sleep hygiene.

  • Avoid noise and lights.
  • Keep the room cooler.
  • Avoid work and heated discussions before sleep.
  • Avoid caffeine, cola, chocolates within eight hours of bedtime.
  • Avoid alcohol within six hours of bedtime.
  • Avoid smoking for two hours before bedtime.
  • Avoid naps during the day.
  • Maintain a regular exercise program but not just before going to bed.
  • Avoid bedside clocks.
  • Consider a light snack before bedtime.
  • Develop a routine.
  • Consider relaxation exercises, reading, a warm bath or listening to music.
