The Two Faces of Janus: a clinician's viewpoint

Tonight I invite you to compare your views regarding the advances in healthcare over the past fifty years.  In Roman times, a doctor or a lawyer might visit the temple of Janus to review the past or to anticipate the future.  Janus, with two faces, was the god of beginnings and transitions.  He could reflect on past successes and omissions and he could anticipate future challenges.

Recently, the English historian, Niall Ferguson, in his book "Civilisation - The West and the Rest", concluded that two of the six criteria for the dominance of the west over the rest were, one, the result of law and, two, advances in medical services.
